CMD ROUTE BEN NEVIS
The CMD Route (Carn Mor Dearg Arete) is a popular and scenic route for ascending Ben Nevis, the highest peak in the United Kingdom This route is known for its breathtaking views and challenging terrain, making it a favorite amongst hikers
The most common starting point for the CMD Route is the North Face car park, located near the base of Ben Nevis. From here, hikers typically begin their ascent along the well-marked trail.
The initial section of the climb involves ascending the slopes of Carn Mor Dearg, which offers a mix of trails and rocky paths. This part of the trek is relatively straightforward, but as hikers gain elevation, they will encounter steeper sections that demand a good level of fitness and experience.
Carn Mor Dearg Arete: After reaching the summit of Carn Mor Dearg, hikers traverse the CMD Arete — a narrow, rocky ridge that connects Carn Mor Dearg to the summit of Ben Nevis. This section provides stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The arete is one of the most exhilarating parts of the route, and care should be taken due to its exposed nature.
Summit of Ben Nevis: The final ascent leads to the summit of Ben Nevis at 1,345 meters (4,413 feet). The summit is often dubbed by climbers as a "place of extremes" — it can experience unpredictable weather conditions, and visibility may vary significantly.
After summiting, hikers generally descend via the Ben Nevis Mountain Path, which is less challenging but more populated than the CMD Route. The descent can also serve as an opportunity to reflect on the day and take in the contrasting landscapes.
